The ever charismatic Gerard Depardieu gives his best performance for years as an over-the-hill dancehall singer given a new lease of life when he falls for an attractive but troubled woman of half his age.
The story of unlikely partnerships forming between two people searching for that intangible something in their lives is nothing new (Lost in Translation), but The Singer stands out for the remarkable onscreen chemistry between Depardieu and the fragile Cecile de France. With a thoughtful, finely nuanced script and a wonderful soundtrack of sentimental dancehall numbers sung with great feeling by Depardieu himself, The Singer is a life affirming joyride.
